Crafted by the artisans from the Luangwa Artisan Collective, this Tonga basket is woven from natural palm leaves. Traditionally used for winnowing maize, these light and beautiful baskets are woven on radials of 'creepers' (vines), and palm leaves are sometimes dyed with bark and roots to make up the designs. These African baskets look amazing as wall decor or to decorate a table. They will look very similar to the pictures but each basket has unique color variations due to the natural materials used.
The artisans from this small cooperative are independent artisans that work out from Tribal Textiles: all sale proceeds go directly to them and their families. We train those local artists in product development and business skills such as merchandising, accounting and pricing. We work with them to create beautiful products and give them access to local and international wholesale markets. We built for them an all-weather work and market place on Tribal Textiles ground, where they can sell to visitors.
