These gorgeous Tonga baskets are expertly handcrafted by artisans from the Luangwa Artisan Collective in Zambia. Traditionally used for winnowing maize, these baskets are handwoven together with natural palm leaves sometimes dyed with bark and roots to make up the designs. Light and beautiful, these baskets make for beautiful wall decor or to decorate a table.
The artisans from Luangwa Artisan Collective are independent artisans that work out from Tribal Textiles, and all sale proceeds go directly to them and their families. We train those local artists in product development and business skills such as merchandising, accounting and pricing. We work with them to create beautiful products and give them access to local and international wholesale markets. We built for them an all-weather work and market place on Tribal Textiles ground, where they can sell to visitors.
While the technique is the same, each artisan has his own way of weaving and dying, making each piece unique in its own special way.
