Uniquely Handcrafted

From design to production, we minimise our environmental impact by sourcing locally, using sustainable materials, and repurposing waste.

cut & sew
gmo-free cotton
Our GMO-free cotton is cut into the dimensions of the finished product using scissors, a ruler and a very accurate eye!
We use 100% GMO-free, natural cotton fabric grown, spun, and woven in Zimbabwe. As much as we would love to work with organic cotton, we have so far not been able to find an organic cotton farm in southern Africa that can provide us with fabric in large enough quantities.
Until then, we prefer to support our neighbouring country rather than increasing our carbon footprint by sourcing organic cotton from a distant part of the world.

unique batik
Starching the Design
Our starch is made by mixing water and flour together. Once the cut fabric has been soaked in water and laid out on a work-table, one of our starchers will use it to hand-draw our patterns onto the fabric .. a highly skilled technique taking years to perfect!

colour matching
Mixing the Paint
Whilst the starched textile is hung up to dry in the hot African sun, Richard - our Paint Mixer – mixes the colours by hand, using primary pigments and a base emulsion to match by eye to swatches created by our designer.
We use water-based, non-hazardous and non-toxic paints that are safe for both people and the environment.

CAREfully balanced colour
hand PAINTING
Our skilled painters bring the textile pieces to life by carefully hand painting and balancing the colours on the designs in order to create a unique products for your home.
Upholding our zero-waste positive production process, any leftover paint form a desing project is mixed together to make black paint.

baked goods
colour fixing
All of our products are baked in an industrial oven at over 150℃.
This ensures the textiles fully washable and prevents fading of the vibrant colours in the future.

the most satisfying part
Scraping
The softened starch is removed from the design, revealing the intricate design beneath. The textile is then washed and hung up to dry again.
As part of our zero-wast policy, the starch that is removed is collected and dried in the sun before being given to a brilliant local initiated, One Planet Cafe, who make the greeting cards we then sell in our shop.
The rest feeds the monkeys!

the end!
sewing
Once dry, our expert sewing team create their magic and our products are ready to head to your homes around the world!
