Priscilla Nkhata
Head Starcher
Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your role within the company?
I'm Priscilla Nkhata, I started working at tribal textiles in 1999! I started in the painting department and after I worked in the starching department. I was promoted to head starcher 2018.
When did you join Tribal Textiles and why did you pick Tribal Textiles?
I initially started working because I wanted to send my child to school, which meant I needed to find money for the school fees. Whilst I was looking around for a way to make money, I found Tribal. I ended up applying for a job because I saw it was employing local people, quite rare at the time and I heard it was a good company that would help people. I was lucky to join at a time where 2 friends were working here, Kennedy Chulu & Richard Mwanza.
Inspiring Colleagues
positive working
Tell us about a colleague past or present who was inspiring to you.
Nathan! He always gives good advice, we all appreciate him. I also have to mention Tizoanana who was our previous head of department and encouraged me with my work.
Do you have a favourite collection, design or product of Tribals?
My favourite old design which I could do with my eyes closed or when I’m sleeping – which was Ladies & Warriors! I love the dancing poses! Now I absolutely love the new Matika collection!
Rewarding Moments
Laughs and more
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part for me is the freedom of creativity & drawing. Everyday I am able to use my hands and skills to create the beautiful designs on our products. We are lucky to have many different collections which means me and my team always have lots of variety wihtin our starching plans.
How would you describe Tribal Textiles?
We make sustainable home decor like napkins, tablecloths, which we started selling to tourists and then eventually we have been lucky enough to sell them around the world. We’re a good team, very creative and there is a lot of love between each one of us.
