SMALL BUSINESS BIG HEART
We are based in the heart of Luangwa, Zambia. Just on the edge of one of Zambia's many beautiful and wild national parks.
Tribal Textiles is a small team of innovative thinkers, creative problem solvers, and motivated individuals, united by our mission to change the world of textile production with a focus on handcraft, ethics and sustainability.
Together, we strive to create meaningful change through our designs.
Tribal Textiles has been running for 32 years, our main product is handcrafted textiles. We also dabble in a bit of glass recycling and support a local artisan craft group.
We work to create sustainable impact in South Luangwa, Zambia through creativity and craftsmanship by going beyond fair wages, reinvesting in community strengthening initiatives, and supporting local wildlife conservation.
As of 2023, we have 50 creatives in our textile workshop, 5 staff who passionately drive our sales across our stores and 6 staff keeping the cogs turning behind the scenes in our little bush office.
We're a vibrant bunch, and we are all passionate about the area we live, sustainability and of course, our very creative textiles.
We are located in Mfuwe, the main settlement of South Luangwa National Park in the Eastern Province of Zambia.
We currently have two stores, one location in Mfuwe airport and one just outside of the park Gates. Our wild housing plot, office and workshop are located somewhere in between along the road!
CLOSED FOR 2023, APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR 2024
From marketing, to design, to merchandising ... We are always on the hunt for interns for their fresh input and enthusiastic ideas here at Tribal Textiles.
A minimum of three months, as working permits run for 3 months at a time in Zambia.
We are flexible on dates, however we do close for the rains between Dec - March.
Working alongside the design & production manager Jennifer and the Tribal workshop team. There is a spectrum of creativity here from recycled glass, artisan weaving, to our standard batik textiles. Interns tend to have a play in each department and then concentrate on what interests them the most.
Working five days per week 7am – 4.30pm.
Working alongside the sales & marketing manager Allegra and the Tribal office team. From social media ideas, to the website, and merchandising the Tribal store.
Working five days per week 7.30am – 5pm.
Who You Are
• You are comfortable with remote living, as we are located in the Zambian bush. It would suit a character who is ok without home comforts, simple living and a lack of signal!
• You love nature and being outdoors. The area Tribal Textiles is based in is very wild, there is a whole lot of wildlife from bugs to snakes. The housing plot is located further out from the national park, so we don’t have elephants passing through, just the occasional hyena.
• You are adaptable, sometimes the power cuts out, sometimes things break. It’s key to go with the flow here and adapt to whatever bush life throws at you!
• You have a keen interest in sustainability and conservation, as this is part of our ethos.
• You can drive! Either manual or automatic, we have two company cars and unfortunately it’s the only way to get around here. Don’t worry... there’s only one road, you can’t get lost!
We provide housing for you to stay in on our housing plot in Mfuwe. There are 3 houses, your neighbours would be the design manager, sales manager and the watchman! We have a spare house for our interns. The houses come fully equipped with kitchen appliances, cutlery etc, bed linen, towels.. the usual.
As we normally have two interns at the same time, you would be sharing a house with the other intern / future bestie!
Living Costs / Visa / Flights
You are given a monthly living allowance of $200. There are local shops to buy food and general goods from. The cost of living here is quite low.
We organise / cover permit costs - about $800-$1000 depending on the exchange rate.
We would expect the intern to cover the costs of their own flights into Mfuwe. Flights stop at Lusaka, and then hop on a Proflight flight to Mfuwe. Airlines to Lusaka include Qatar, Emirates, Kenya Airways, Rwandair and Ethiopian.
