Tribal In A Nutshell
About
Tribal Textiles has been running for 32 years, our main product is handcrafted textiles. We also dabble in a bit of glass recycling and support a local artisan craft group.
We work to create sustainable impact in South Luangwa, Zambia through creativity and craftsmanship by going beyond fair wages, reinvesting in community strengthening initiatives, and supporting local wildlife conservation.
The Team
As of 2024, we have 50 creatives in our textile workshop, 5 staff who passionately drive our sales across our stores and 6 staff keeping the cogs turning behind the scenes in our little bush office.
We're a vibrant bunch, and we are all passionate about the area we live, sustainability and of course, our very creative textiles.
Location
We are located in Mfuwe, the main settlement of South Luangwa National Park in the Eastern Province of Zambia.
We currently have two stores, one location in Mfuwe airport and one just outside of the park Gates. Our wild housing plot, office and workshop are located somewhere in between along the road!

Who You Are
• You are comfortable with remote living, as we are located in the Zambian bush. It would suit a character who is ok without home comforts, simple living and a lack of signal!
• You love nature and being outdoors. The area Tribal Textiles is based in is very wild, there is a whole lot of wildlife from bugs to snakes. The housing plot is located further out from the national park.
• You are adaptable, sometimes the power cuts out, sometimes things break. It’s key to go with the flow here and adapt to whatever bush life throws at you!
• You have a keen interest in sustainability and conservation, as this is part of our ethos.
• You can drive! Either manual or automatic, we have two company cars and unfortunately it’s the only way to get around here. Don’t worry... there’s only one road, you can’t get lost!

We provide housing for you to stay in on our housing plot in Mfuwe. The houses come fully equipped with kitchen appliances, cutlery etc, bed linen, towels. etc.

You are given a monthly living allowance of $200. There are local shops to buy food and general goods from. The cost of living here is quite low.
We organise / cover permit costs - about $800-$1000 depending on the exchange rate.
We would expect the intern to cover the costs of their own flights into Mfuwe. Flights stop at Lusaka, and then hop on a Proflight flight to Mfuwe. Airlines to Lusaka include Qatar, Emirates, Kenya Airways, Rwandair and Ethiopian.
